Getting Here

Whittier is a scenic 60 mile drive south of Anchorage.  However allow at least 1.5 hours.  It is a 2-4 lane highway, but sometimes traffic can slow down.  Occasionally an accident or landslide will close the highway temporarily.  So allow extra time for variables.

The Seward Highway winds along the Turnagain Arm of Cook Inlet.  You may see windsurfers, hooligan fisherman, eagles or Beluga whales.

You will need to wait at the tunnel for the next opening.  Traffic goes into Whittier on the half hour and comes back out at the top of the hour.  The cost is $12 for passenger cars.  For more information you can see the details on the Tunnel Website

Another option is to take the train from Anchorage.  Click here for details.
